Braintree Ecological Efforts

Efforts have been made to encourage wildlife to call Silk Row and the surrounding area home. The landscape in and around the development has been enhanced with mature planting and ecological improvements designed to enhance the habitat at Silk Row and create a framework that ensures that local flora and fauna can thrive.

Bats

Bat boxes are to be installed on the south-western facing aspects of the buildings at Silk Row. Integrated bat boxes are built directly into the brickwork of a property, providing an unobtrusive and aesthetically pleasing habitat solution. The boxes consist of a self-contained concrete roost chamber with a facing that can be fitted to suit any existing brick, wood, stonework or rendered finish.

Birds

To replace nesting habitat lost during the construction process, a variety of bird boxes have been installed across Silk Row. These include integrated sparrow terraces and swift boxes, as well as general sizes installed on retained and newly planted trees around the development.

Hedgehogs

A local population of hedgehogs has been identified close to Silk Row and consideration has been taken to allow their movement through the development. Holes in garden fences will allow them to travel around the area, with nesting boxes strategically placed in quiet corners to encourage inhabitation and provide a safe location for hibernation.

Bees

Numerous bee species live solitary lives and bee posts are a contemporary way to provide a safe home for them. These freestanding bee nests will be placed around the development to encourage native species to take residence at Silk Row and provide essential pollination for landscaped communal areas, retained planting and gardens. As solitary bee species don’t have a queen, hive or honey to protect they are non-aggressive, which means they are safe to encourage around children and pets.
